How to flash CDMA Motorola phone. Tutorial
What is flashing?
Flashing is the process of replacing your current phones firmware (a phones Operating System) with either a newer one or another carrier's firmware. Usually to "unlock" or to have better features. You can only flash with the same model firmware as your current phone or you will brick your phone. Example: Say you have a Verizon V3m. You CAN flash your phone to Alltel V3m Firmware.
Note, that flashing will probably void your phone's warranty
Is my phohe GSM or CDMA?
Generally CDMA phones can be distinguished from GSM ones by the following key points.
CDMA phones do not use a SIM card, little piece of plastic with a chip that is inserted in the phone (usually located under the battery). However there are some exceptions of multisystem, multiband handsets that can be used on both CDMA and GSM networks.
Another way to determine what system your phone is using is by looking for phone's unique numeric identifier. GSM phones use IMEI whereas CDMA phones are identified with ESN (Electronic Serial Number). Both can be found on the sticker under the battery. IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number can also be retrieved by entering *#06# into the phone.
IMEI is used for GSM, UMTS and iDEN mobile phone as well as some satellite phones.
ESNs are mainly used with CDMA, TDMA, AMPS systems
What are the examples of CDMA service providers?
Examples of US and Canadian CDMA carriers are: Sprint, Alltel, Alaska Communication Systems, Cellcom, Cricket, Verizon, US Cellular, Bell, Telus, MTS, SaskTel, etc
What will I need to flash my phone?
Motorola USB cable
Mini USB data cable
Motorola P2K USB dara cable
Motorola USB drivers
Flashing software
RSD Lite can be downloaded at this site
QPST software can be downloaded here
Corresponding firmware
Check the following threads of our forum
and here:
After installing your corresponding drivers, downloaded the correct firmware, installed RSD lite and installing QPST you need to back up your data.
Open up QPST Configuration. You should see your phone under one of the ports
Highlight your phone (if it is not showing up try a new usb port, or rebooting your phone or hit the Add port if you know the port your phone is using) and click on the Start Clients > SERVICE PROGRAMING This will bring up a new window.
Make sure to backup phone firmware first. This is done in case something goes wrong you will be able to restore the firmware and revive your phone.
To backup select Read from Phone and save it a safe location on your PC.
Its time to flash your phone now.
Close the QPST server (by right clicking on the running apps bar and clicking Stop QPST Server)
Open up RSD lite.
Now when it's open you should see your phone in the list. If not try unplugging it and plugging it back in to the same or different USB port.
Click on the ... button to locate the firmware you downloaded earlier. When you have found it click on Start
PLEASE REMEMBER TO MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED BEFORE FLASHING!!!
The flashing process will take approximately 5 minutes. During that time DO NOT touch your phone. It should be closed.
You will know when its done when it says PASS. If it FAILS unplug your phone from your computer and take the battery out. Put it back in and retry your flash. As long as you have your bootloader you are okay.
You have accomplished your first step forward to your new modded phone.
Final Note: Every firmware has different features, like Verizon to alltel, verizon had GIN, alltel does not. There is a way around that please visit the link below for further instructions.
Flashing your phone is only 1/2 of the process. I will be following up with the other half. |
